Located
15 miles east of Eugene on Highway 58.
In
search of a path through the Cascades, pioneers began to settle
what is now, Lowell, in the 1850s. The settlement was originally
called Cannon, after a local, but was changed to Lowell in 1882.
The reason for the name change is debated between different tales.
One is that a man named Amos D. Hyland, a farmer, purchased 2,450
acres of land in 1874 and named it after his former residence, Lowell,
Maine. Another claim as to why the name change is when the post
office was established in 1880, it was originally called Cannon
and later renamed Lowell because it received too much mail meant
for Canyon, Oregon. The Hyland family farmed the land, grew hops,
raised livestock and maintained a store. The store was the major
supplier for the region and was run by son-in-law Albert E. McFarland.
Logging became increasingly important in the 1900s and gave families
extra income. The construction between 1947 and 1961 of the Dexter
and Lookout Point reservoirs provided residents with many jobs.
Exactly 150 landowners forfeited hundreds of thousands of acres
and moved, due to the construction. The railroad and state highway
were relocated across the reservoir, making potential growth to
Lowell more difficult. The Lowell Bridge was built in 1945. It measures
24 feet, making it the widest bridge in Lane County. The bridge
was raised six feet in 1953 when the Dexter Dam was built and the
reservoir filled for the first time.
Today,
Lowell has a Marina and lakside park, 2 grocery stores and gas stations.
