Sophronia and Cornelius Hills settled the Middle Fork of the Willamette in 1847-1848. In 1859, their son Jasper was born, the first white male in the area. In 1880, the settlement officially was named Jasper, in honor of the child. In 1876, the first school was established, the first general store opened in 1880 and in 1884, the post office was built. A farmer, Adam Horn, introduced Evergreen Berries into the area, which were sent from the East. People came from all over to get "starter" plants from him. Today the berries are seen as bothersome to many.
The Pengra Bridge is located on Place Road off Jasper-Lowell Road. It was built in 1938 and was named after B.J. Pengra, who built the Oregon Central Military Road. The covered bridge has two of the longest timbers ever cut for a bridge in Oregon.
